Activities nearby
- The village of Cave del Predil and its surroundings are an ideal place for active relaxation and discovering the beauties of the Julian Alps, which will surely inspire you.
Seasonal activities
In the winter months, the area is popular for skiing and snowboarding, and there are also ski mountaineering trails available for those looking for a challenge.
In summer, you can visit nearby lakes and rivers, which are ideal for water sports such as canoeing, rafting or fishing.

Fontanone Di Goriuda
From Sella Nevea (1190 m) to Chiusaforte stretches the long and steep Val Raccolana valley full of sharp serpentines and breathtaking views. You will feel like you are in the Jurassic (Julian) Park.
Somewhere in the middle is the beautiful Fontanone di Goriuda waterfall (685 m). It is almost 200 m high and you can walk under it through a cave carved into the rock. It always depends on the weather, how strong it is. Of course, it is most abundant in spring and autumn, during the rainy season. In winter it is one big icicle wall.
The walk from the parking lot is easy, 5 - 10 min. walk to the waterfall.
Near the parking lot is the excellent family Trattoria Al Fontanon di Guriude. Although it does not look very appealing, they have their own pond with trout that are smoked right on site.

Tarvisio and surroundings
From spring to autumn, hiking is in full swing. There are
so many hills that they will satisfy both demanding climbers and weekend tourists. There are several routes across the valleys that are easy and therefore suitable for families with small children or pensioners. You don't necessarily have to go up the hill to admire the beauty.
EASY HIKES AND VIEWS
Visit of Monte Santo di Lussari , where you can take a cable car. The more fit can climb the hill (approx. 1000 m elevation), no one is stopping them ;-)
Laghi di Fusine , turquoise lakes on the Slovenian-Italian border. From there, there is a pleasant walk to Rifugio Zacchi, where you can not only enjoy the views, but also eat well.
The Val Saisera valley , where there are several hiking trails. At the end of the valley, a traverse path begins to the Rifugio Grego mountain hut. The elevation gain is only 340 m and at the hut you can sit under the second highest peak of the Julian Alps - Jôf di Montassio.
The Val Bartolo valley in Camporosso , where there is minimal elevation gain, but it definitely won't deprive you of views of the rocks.

Altopiano Montasio
The Montasio plateau is a unique alpine phenomenon. There are very extensive pastures where cows graze. Local farms produce delicious Montasio cheese, which is one of the most popular in Italy.
It is located exactly on the other side of the valley opposite the Sella Nevea ski resort. You can reach it by car through very steep serpentines up to an altitude of 1440 m above sea level. Parking is free. It is 16 km from Cave del Predil.
You can either take a very short walk to the Malga Montasio farm or an easy hike to the Rifugio di Brazzá with an elevation gain of about 200m. You can sit outside with a good meal at an altitude of 1660 m above sea level, and you won't be able to stop looking. Behind you will be the second highest peak of the Julian Alps - Jôf di Montasio.
More demanding tourists will find more difficult and several-hour treks, via ferratas and even cozy mountain "bivacco" where they can sleep and watch the sunset and sunrise. Often, at these heights, entire herds of ibex keep tourists company :-)

Mangart
Mangart is the third highest peak in Triglav National Park and the fourth highest in the entire Julian Alps.
It is located on the Slovenian-Italian border. It is 2679 m high and its beauty and breathtaking views can be admired even by those who do not dare to go hiking.
You can drive up to Mangartské sedlo (approx. 2000 m above sea level) and enjoy the views. They are most beautiful at sunset. However, check the opening hours before visiting the Koča pod Mangrtom mountain hut, it is not open all year round.
The climb to the top is physically demanding and is only recommended for experienced hikers. There is also a via ferrata route that leads from the Italian side and starts at the Laghi di Fusine lakes.

Laghi di Fusine
The Laghi di Fusine are 10 km from Tarvisio. You can get there by car in about 12 minutes. But what we would recommend the most is to get there by bike on the cycle path towards Slovenia.
The lakes are known for their clear, turquoise water with panoramic views of the Julian Alps. Swimming is prohibited in the lakes, as they are part of a protected area. However, you can rent a boat or walk around and enjoy the views.
Behind the parking lot by the second lake, the trails to the Rifugio di Zacchi mountain hut begin. There are two paths, one steeper, for trekking, and the other more comfortable, a traverse, also suitable for mountain bikes. It depends on your fitness.
The hut is located at an altitude of 1,380 meters above sea level. From the terrace there are beautiful views all the way to the Austrian Alps and you can enjoy a unique apple strudel.
For more demanding mountaineers, there is also a via ferrata trail directly and perpendicularly to the Slovenian Mangart. It leads partly along the cycle path to Rifugio Zacchi and the turn is marked.

Cycling

Cycling Slovenia / Italy / Austria
For cycling enthusiasts, one holiday will not be enough. There are countless opportunities for cycling here. A beautiful cycle route stretches through the entire Júlský Valley.
From Tarvisio you can comfortably ride the cycle route through Kranjska Gora, Mojstrana and Triglav National Park to Lake Bled.
Tarvisio is located on the popular Alpe Adria route, which leads from Salzburg to Grado, to the sea.
For the more demanding, we have the routes that Primož Roglič trains on. From Lago del Predil you can reach the Mangart Pass through steep switchbacks, under one of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park in Slovenia.
Another challenge is the Vršič Pass. The start is on the road behind Kranjska Gora, by Lake Jasna. From there, just keep going up the hill, you can't get lost.
If that's not enough, you can descend from Vršič Pass to the Trenta Valley, swim in the cold water of the Velika Korita Soča, and just before Bovec, turn right and return to Tarvisio through steep switchbacks below Mangart and around Lago del Predil.

Ciclovia Alpe Adria
The Ciclovia Alpe Adria is a beautiful stretch of trail leading all the way to the seaside town of Grado. The most popular and most frequented section is the one from Tarvisio to Venzone, which is 60.4 km long and has a comfortable 208 m of "elevation" along its entire length. The elevation gain is primarily on the return journey, as you descend from Tarvisio to the sea.
The route leads through the mountains, partly along the old railway line. You pass through rocky tunnels and from a height you come out onto the vast Tagliamento riverbed with turquoise water.
From time to time, a waterfall appears where cyclists take a break. We therefore advise you to pack a swimsuit and a towel, they will definitely come in handy in the summer. Apart from water, you don't need to pack anything special. The old station cafeteria in Chiusaforte is very popular.
The small town of Pontebba is also worth mentioning, which is the main "meeting point" for cyclists in the summer season. The square has excellent cafes, wine bars and pizzerias. The good news is that you can return by a special cycle train: Venzone - Tarvisio Boscoverde.
A ticket with a bicycle costs €13 for an adult.
You get a 20% discount on tickets purchased online for the weekend.

Giro d'Italia
The Giro D'Italia is one of the most important sporting events in Italy. In May 2023, Tarvisio was part of this circuit and hosted the most difficult stage with the climb to Monte Santo di Lussari with an elevation gain of over 1000 m in a few kilometers.
In Italy it's a big celebration and the whole city dresses in pink :-)
Those who want to compete with world champions have the opportunity to complete this route from Tarvisio along the cycle path to Valbruna and from there steeply up to Monte Lussari.
Please note that the route is one-way, there is a strict ban on going down. You must also return with your bike by cable car. The last ride is at 5:00 p.m. in summer.

Monte Santo Di Lussari
In Tarvisio, there are several slopes on the hills, from short and blue for children to long black ones for demanding skiers. In total, there are 24 km. The region is very supportive of young people and is therefore an ideal place for family skiing.
Children under 6 years old have a free ski pass and children from 7 to 18 years old only for €10/day. A non-discounted ticket costs €44/day.
The most sought-after place is Monte Santo di Lussari. In the "church grounds" there are several restaurants and wine bars with excellent gastronomy.
You have panoramic views of the entire Slovenian and Italian Julian Alps and, as a bonus, Austrian Carinthia.

Sella Nevea
Another accessible and smaller resort is SELLA NEVEA. It is only 11 km from Cave del Predil and the road that leads around Lago del Predil is an experience in itself. This resort is located in the middle of the July wilderness and thanks to its exclusive views it made it to the TOP10 ski resorts in Europe list of the travel portal LONELY PALNET.
The interesting thing about this resort is that it is located on both the Slovenian and Italian sides of the Julian Alps.
The Slovenian part of Kanin is accessible by cable car from Bovec. However, reconstruction is currently underway, so the Slovenian part is not open.
The prices of ski passes are the same as in Tarvisio. Accordingly, passes purchased in Tarvisio are also valid in Sella Nevea, and vice versa.

Julian Ski Pass
Skiing in the Tarvisio area is unique in that you are not tied to just one ski resort. It is here that you have the opportunity to travel around the area to other ski resorts in Italy, Austria and Slovenia, depending on your whim, travel curiosity or in case of bad weather.
The advantage is the JULIAN SKI PASS, which is valid in all three countries. Every day different slopes, different views, different adventures.
• Italy 7 ski resorts
• Slovenia 4 ski resorts
• Austria 4 ski resorts
In total, there are 300 km of slopes.
More information about individual resorts can be found at https://sloalps.com/.
It's a Slovenian product and you can't buy it on the slopes in Italy.

Val Saisera (IT) Planica - Rateče (SI)
In Tarvisio and its surroundings there are several places with groomed cross-country skiing trails, with a total length of 22 km. The most visited destination is the VAL SAISERA valley behind the village of Valbruna, where approximately 8 km of trails await you.
Once you are in this destination, it would be a sin not to test the tracks at the NORDIC CENTER PLANICA (Slovenia), where the world championship races are held. This area also includes ski jumps and is located in the middle of the picturesque Triglav Valley. It is home to the second highest mammoth ski jump in the world and the modern Ski Jumping Museum, which is worth seeing.
From the stadium, there is a forest trail to the DOM V TAMARJU mountain hut, where you can enjoy a wide selection of Slovenian cuisine. In addition to hearty soups, we recommend Štruklji as a dessert, which is a Slovenian specialty.
On the way to Planica, right on the border (IT-SI) is the village of RATEČE and here is a beautiful groomed route directly on the cycle path. The circuit extends across Slovenia and Italy at the same time.

Arena Paruzzi
The golf course is converted into cross-country skiing trails in the winter.
It is called ARENA PARUZZI and is named after the local runner Gabriela Paruzzi, who won the Olympic gold medal for Italy in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The simple route with minimal elevation gain is 3 km long and is also suitable for beginners and children.

Lago del Predil
Lago del Predil is a virgin alpine lake with an area of approximately1 km2, located at an altitude of 969 m. It is a beautiful and peaceful wilderness surrounded on two sides by the Julian Alps of Italy, Slovenia and even with a view of Austrian Carinthia.
The main dominant of the lake are the Cinque Punte (translated as "Five Points") towering above the village of Cave del Predil. The most beautiful view of them is from the back of the lake.
The white pebble beach is large and you will not find yourselfcrowded with anyone there. The lake has so far resisted the mass invasion of tourists, it is hidden in the seclusion of the border area. It provides real peace and relaxation.
The water is cold but refreshing. Winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy the lake either from a kayak or a paddleboard.
We will be happy to rent paddleboards, bring them to and from the beach: €15 - 3 hours / €25 - the whole day.
We recommend packing a small picnic with you, especially water, because there are no buffets on the beaches. However, you can eat very well at the Chalet al Lago mountain hut on the access side of the lake. They have great local wine and the terrace with a view of the water and the surrounding mountains will make you want to go home.
You can walk around the entire lake in about 1.5 - 2 hours.

Velika Korita Soče Slovinsko
A trip to the Velika Korita Soča in the Trenta Valley, in Slovenia's Triglav National Park, is definitely worth a visit. It takes about 40 minutes by car from Tarvisio.Lago del Predil - on the border with Slovenia, a view of Mangart - Log pod Mangartom - Velika Korita Soča
- Trenta Valley - Source of the Soča River - Vršič Pass -
Jasna Lake - Kranjska Gora - Zelenci Nature Reserve
- Nordic Center Planica (ski jumping bridges) - Tarvisio.
It is only open in spring, summer and autumn. In winter it is impassable due to snow. In spring and autumn it is a popular route for bikers.

Mining and Military Museum
Cave del Predil was an important mining site until about a decade ago, where zinc and lead were actively mined during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The mine is now closed, but it has been transformed into a museum. You can take a tour of the mine and the museum building, where you will learn much about the rich history of this industry and a place with a full-fledged social life.
The tour lasts 1.5 hours in total and must be booked in advance. An audio interpreter is available in German and English.
In addition to mining, this place was an important battlefield during World War I. In the surrounding mountains, you can find many remains of former military forts, bunkers and shooting galleries during your hikes. And that is why the Cave del Predil military museum is no less interesting.

Fun Park dell'Angelo
Fun Park dell'Angelo seasonally adapts its entertainment for children.
In winter, it is a toboggan run and ski lift. You can bring your own sleds and bobsleighs or rent them. The bobsleigh mountain railway operates year-round, so the whole family can enjoy fun together.
In summer, there are jumping trampolines, inflatable boat rides, a mini bike track, a boat carousel, climbing frames, slides and many other attractions. You can find it on the main road towards Camporosso, on the left side, below the SPAR supermarket.

Golf Senza Confini Tarvisio
If you don't need to "work out" on the surrounding hills and would rather relax, for example, while playing golf, it's good to know that Tarvisio has a beautiful golf course with views of the Julian Alps and Austrian Carinthia.
